On the 3rd Day of Christmas

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-13

The popular song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is usually seen as simply a nonsense song for children with secular origins. However, some have suggested that it is a song of Christian instruction, perhaps dating to the 16th century religious wars in England, with hidden references to the basic teachings of the Christian Faith. They contend that it was a mnemonic device to teach the catechism to youngsters. The "true love" mentioned in the song is not an earthly suitor, but refers to God Himself. The "me" who receives the presents refers to those who are a part of the Christian Faith. Each of the "days" represents some aspect of the Christian Faith that was important for children to learn.

Whether the song was used as a catechism or not, the religious meanings behind this Christmas Carol, warm my heart and remind me who this season is all about!

So, let's sing the song and learn what each verse is all about . . .

The 12 Days of Christmas

On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me a partridge in a pear tree.

True love = God, and Partridge in a Pear Tree = Jesus Christ on the Tree (cross)

On the second day of Christmas, my true love sent to me Two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Two Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testament (Old and New Covenant)

On the third day of Christmas, my true love sent to me Three French hens, Two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Three French Hens = The Three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Love - 1 Corinthians 13:13

Prayer:
Lord God, I ask that You would bless my family this Christmas and continue to guide us along Your path. I also pray for blessings for the rest of the holiday season and in the year ahead. Strengthen our faith, give us hope in this dark world and help us to love always! In the name of Your Son Jesus, Amen.
