Be Still and Know

"There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. But the LORD said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' Elijah replied, 'I have zealously served the LORD God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.' The Lord told him, 'Go out and stand before me on the mountain.' And as Elijah stood there, the LORD passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' He replied again, 'I have zealously served the LORD God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.' Then the LORD told him, 'Go back the same way you came, and travel to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive there, anoint Hazael to be king of Aram. Then anoint Jehu son of Nimshi to be king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from the town of Abel-meholah to replace you as my prophet. Anyone who escapes from Hazael will be killed by Jehu, and those who escape Jehu will be killed by Elisha! Yet I will preserve 7,000 others in Israel who have never bowed down to Baal or kissed him!'" - 1 Kings 19:9-18

"Be still and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10

Sometimes we are so busy with our own concerns that we cannot hear God’s voice: the noise of our own problems and our work, block God out! There is no doubt that our concerns, like Elijah’s, are good ones. After all, we are concerned for the well-being of God’s Church. Yet, we must learn to lay aside our own concerns, and our own expectations, and our own agendas, and quiet our souls so that we may hear the ‘gentle whisper’ of God as he speaks His truth to us today. We must learn to hear God in the quiet and gentle works of Christian love and mercy. We must learn to listen to the Spirit of God at work in us and around us in the quiet deeds of sacrificial love, we do for others each and every day.

Notice that in our Scripture reading, it is not until after Elijah had heard God in the ‘gentle whisper’ that God gives him his assigned task. The same is true for you and I today. Until we hear the ‘gentle whisper,’ then the work we are doing is good, but could be so much more. What is your assigned task? What is God asking of you? What does God want you to do for Him and for others?

It’s time to stop worrying about what others are or are not doing. These are God’s concerns. All that God calls us to do, in the quiet whisper, is to feed his sheep, love His lambs, and share God everyday with all of His children!

God has a message for you. Are we ready to quiet your soul, quiet your mind and really begin to listen to God. He has a message for each of us. And once we are able to push aside the noise of this world, He will give us our message….a mission which more often that not is done quietly, behind the scenes, for others and for the Lord.

May God find us all eager to hear his words and commands, eager to obey and to serve him in big ways or small. May we all truly learn to listen to the gentle whisper of our God as it comes to us today and in the days ahead.

"Be Still and Know," by Steven Curtis Chapman

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is holy
Be still Oh restless heart of mine
Bow before the Prince of Peace
Let the noise and clamor cease

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is faithful
Consider all that He has done
Stand in awe and be amazed
And know that He will never change
Be still

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is God
Be still
Be speechless

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is our Father
Come and rest your head upon His breast
Listen to the rhythm of
His unfailing heart of love
Beating for his little ones
Calling each of us to come
Be still, Be still

Prayer:
Yahweh, help us to be more like Elijah, running to that deserted place that we might be able to hear you clearly. Then, help us to know that we will not always find you in the wind, earthquake or fire, but rather in the quiet whisper. Get our attention, Lord God. Help us to hear you clearly today, that we might be a blessing to all of your children, today and all days. Amen.
