Breath of Heaven

"'Peace to you! As the Father sent me, I also send you.' And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" - John 20:21-22

As I have been working my way through the devotions this week, a song keeps running through my head. It is the song “Breath of Heaven” by Amy Grant. This song is so powerful, that it takes my very breath away, when I listen to it. It grabs my heart, and invariably there are tears running down my cheeks as I listen to the words.

"I have traveled many moonless nights cold and weary with a Babe inside
and wonder what I've done. Holy Father you have come and chosen me now to carry your son.
I am waiting in a silent prayer I am frightened by the load I bare.
In a world as cold as stone, must I walk this path alone? Be with me now. Be with me now.
Breath of Heaven hold me together be forever near me Breath of Heaven.
Breath of Heaven, Light in my darkness pour over me your holiness for you are holy Breath of Heaven.
Do you wonder as you watch my face if a wiser one should have had my place?
But I offer all I am for the mercy of your plan. Help me be strong! Help me be... Help me....
Breath of Heaven hold me together be forever near me Breath of Heaven.
Breath of Heaven, Light in my darkness pour over me your holiness for you are holy Breath of Heaven."

Who was this young girl and how righteous was she for God to choose her to carry His Son? I think of my Christian walk. Do I walk in faith? Would God find me a vessel useful to carry out His plans? The last verse brings more tears as I realize the magnitude of the words. God watching Mary...would He wonder "if a wiser one should have had my place?"

If you are a parent, I am sure many times you might have wondered if you are doing this thing called "parenting" right. If you are married, you might have wondered if you are the best mate God meant for your husband or wife. If you are involved in ministry, you might have had moments of doubt if that was really where God has called you. Mary wondered if indeed she was the right one to be entrusted to carry the Son of the Most High God.

That is the time we cry out, "Help me be strong," and God replies, "in your weakness, I am strong."

Breath of Heaven! He breathed into the nostrils of Adam and gave him life, the wind blew over the earth and dried up the flood waters and life spread over the planet. With His last breath Christ breathed life eternal to those who would receive Him and believe in His name. We are strong because he is Emmanuel, God with us, God within us, breath breathed into us.

My prayer is that we will offer Him ourselves for His plan. Since we know that He is holding us in the palm of His hand and that He is with us to the end of the age, let us be the Light in the darkness. Let us stand tall in a world as cold as stone towards the things of God. Let us stand firm and let us be filled with His breath and His holiness because our God is alive and His kingdom shall never end.

Prayer:
Breath of Heaven, I need Your strength today. I cannot continue on through life without You. Like the strength and power You offered to Mary, please come and dwell within me, I pray. Amen.
