Christ's Atoning Sacrifice

"My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world." - 1 John 2:1-2

In just a few days, we will be gathering for World Communion Sunday. This is a special day when Christians all across the planet with gather throughout the day, around a common table, and the sacrifice Christ made for all of humanity.

Because of Christ’s atoning sacrifice, all of our sins have already been paid for. That is why, should we sin, we know that we have a Savior who is truly righteous, atones for our sins, and sets us free!

What about repentance then?

The word “repentance” in Greek is “metanoia,” which means “to change one’s mind.” For example, you used to believe that Jesus was just a good man. Then one day, you repented and believed that He is the Son of the living God, who died for your sins and rose again on the third day, and you gladly took Him as your Savior.

But, be careful that you don’t turn repentance into work that you do. Some turn it into their atoning for their sins by hitting or punishing themselves. We do not atone for our sins, Christ does! He has already done the work! So, there is no need to climb the Himalayas or whip your back bloody, to atone for your sins. No amount of self-mutilation or self-punishment can atone for them. Your sins have already been punished fully in the body of Jesus. Only His finished work on the cross, satisfied God.

So repent, change your mind, and simply believe that Jesus alone is the atonement for your sins! God bless you as you continue your faith journey this Fall.

Prayer:
Help me Lord, for I find it difficult to let You care for my every need. I want to hold on, keep the power, and assert my own authority. I also struggle with forgiveness and grace being given freely. I want to "earn" my love from You. Help me to to better, Lord. Amen.
