Do I Serve Two Masters?

"Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, 'How are we robbing you?' In tithes and offerings." - Malachi 3:8

"’No one can serve two masters,’ Jesus said. ‘Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.’" - Matthew 6:24

Money. It's a powerful thing, isn't it? In our gospel lesson, Jesus puts it on the level of a rival god.

God understands the power of money. That's one reason the Bible has more to say about it than any other subject. There are over 2,300 verses that make reference to the god of wealth. It has been said that the way we handle our finances says more about us and what we value than anything else.

In our Old Testament text, Malachi asks the question, "Will a mere mortal rob God?" Will a person use all that God has given them for personal possessions? Will they refuse to give God the "tithes and offerings" that He requires in worship and service to Him?

This is an issue each of us must deal with. Jesus said that our heart follows after the things we really treasure and value. In what direction is your heart headed?

Prayer:
Lord, we need Your help in the area of money. Remind us that all things come from You and are to be used to honor You. Thank You for Your gracious provisions. Help us to know they all come from You! Amen.
