Fields Are Ripe For Harvest

“Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." - John 4:35

“Open up your eyes,” said Jesus to His disciples. “Look on the harvest,” He exhorted them. Squinting against the mid-day sun, the disciples followed Jesus’ gaze. Coming up the hill toward the village well were the men led by the woman of Samaria. Of course it was the men that the woman went to first. Men were her weakness, but men she knew, men she loved, and men she would tell about the “One who told me all things that ever I did.” Coming to Jesus, the men entreated Him to stay with them. He graciously accepted their invitation.

I am sure the disciples weren’t sure about it all, but Jesus, who “had to go through Samaria” (John 4:4), knew He had to stay two days with the woman and her friends (see John 4:40). And the inevitable miracle happened. “Many more,” we read, “believed because of His own Word,” and not just because of words the woman had spoken about Him.

This, then, was the harvest Jesus spoke about to His disciples. To see similar possibilities, we will need to “lift up our eyes.” The disciples, assigned the mundane task of gathering bread from the village, had forgotten the Bread of Life who walked with them. We must raise up our eyes to Him daily and then follow His gaze to the harvest fields that are ready!

Bread of Life, we are Your followers, we hear You calling, we are ready to work for You. Help us to lift up our eyes, that we might see those around us in need of Your love and grace. Amen.
