"So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law." - Galatians 5:1

Today is Friday the 13th. Did you know that there is actually a name for those who have a fear of today? It's paraskevidekatriaphobia. I can't pronounce it, but it seems that there are many who are plagued by it.

For many people, this day affects decisions such as whether to leave the house, whether to schedule surgery, or whether to buy and sell stocks. Many don't see the harm in people be superstitious. I do not agree!

Fear of Friday the 13th is only one small example of a lot of superstitions entrapping millions of people, all over the world. What is at the root of superstition? Ultimately, lack of trust in God. After all, who is really in charge, Almighty God who sits on the heavenly throne or a black cat, a broken mirror, a date and day, a stone or a charm?

Superstitions replace the true God with false ones and the Bible says: "Let there be no strange god among you; nor shall you worship any foreign god." (Psalm 81:9) Rather than embrace strange gods remember; "So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law." (Galatians 5:1)

If by chance you have fallen for superstitions, discard them and trust in God alone. And, in regards to today, think of it this way: thirteen is the number after twelve and before fourteen, and Friday is the day after Thursday and before Saturday. It's just another day in this amazing new year. Don't let it derail your year.

Prayer:
Lord God, too often I let silly superstitions derail my walk with You. Help me to trust in Your direction and Your plan. Amen.
