The Power of Healing Prayer

"Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops." - James 5:13-18

Prayer for each other has always been a crucial part of being a Christian. Read James 5:13-18 to see what James thought about it. James was a brother of Jesus' and a pillar of the Jerusalem church, along with other apostles.

Are you willing to pray for another person and to allow that person to pray for you? Here is an exercise to do, first alone, then with a prayer partner.

Sit quietly for a couple of minutes. Breathe deeply and quiet your soul. Ask God one thing to lift up to your prayer partner, as they pray for you. It may be forgiveness, strength, breaking down a wall. The Spirit may prompt you to ask for prayer for healing, for anger, for boundaries, for growth in understanding, patience, love, or for discernment of a specific situation or relationship.

There is only one rule: the prayer must be for YOU -- not for a friend, child, co-worker. Ask God what YOU need prayer for.

When you meet with your prayer partner, let them know what you are learning through this prayer exercise. Then go somewhere private and pray for one another. Continue praying for one another even after you part -- as we learn from the Quaker tradition, "hold them in the Light." Agree to pray for one another each day, until you can meet up again.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, please bless my prayer partner, as they hold me in prayer. Help me to keep my prayer partner "in the Light" each day this week. Amen.
