Thy Word

"Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions...Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Psalm 119:18, 105

I remember when my father began to teach me to ride my bike. We began with training wheels, a safe way to get the feel for the bike and to trust in it to carry me down the road.

But, I also remember the day that my father took the training wheels away. I remember my father reassuring me that I could do this and that he was there to see to it that I did not get hurt. He was so excited to see me begin to pedal and to correct the wobble in the bike until I was floating along masterfully. He ran alongside to keep me safe. This whole experience helped me to trust my father more as it also helped me to begin to experience independence.

After I had ridden my bike for a few weeks, I found that I quit focusing on the mechanics of riding a bike. I could then look around me at the people and scenery; I could begin to truly enjoy riding my bike!

Acquiring Bible study skills is a lot like learning how to ride a bike--you have to trust, you have to practice, and then you can enjoy the experience and time with God.

As we practice scripture reading, there are ways that we can examine God's Word that will help us gain our balance and trust in the experience, that we can then hear God's voice in His Word.

First, you have to pay attention to what the scripture is saying. Too often we are reading for quantity, that we do not ready for quality. We miss the hidden blessings when we don't focus on the gift of the Word before us!

Next, we have to take the time to interpret the Word. What is God saying to us today, as we read His Word, today. Know that each time you read God's Word, you will see new and exciting things!

Finally, what does God want you to do with what you have learned. We do not read scripture just to say we've gotten through it. We read scripture to grow and listen and love. God will give you a message out of His Word. The question then becomes, what will you do with what God is directing you to do?

THY WORD by Amy Grant & Michael W. Smith

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
When I feel afraid, think I've lost my way,
Still you're there right beside me.
And nothing will I fear as long as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
I will not forget Your love for me and yet
My heart forever is wandering.
Jesus be my guide, and hold me to your side,
I will love you to the end.

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path,
You're the light unto my path.

Prayer:
Father teach me Your will and Your ways. Speak to me as I read Your Word today! Amen.
