JOY: The Foundation of My Life

As we begin our 9 week journey to JOY in the Lord, we begin with the understanding that Jesus is the foundation of our Joy. Looking at the promise laid out by the Founding Fathers in our Declaration of Independence, we shall see how JOY in the Lord can be found through Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Reckless JOY in the Lord

Last week we looked at Jesus as the Foundation of our Joy. This week we are going to talk about how Reckless Jesus is in sharing seeds of JOY with us. This message is based on the Parable of the Sower. What type of soil do you offer to Jesus? In you, is he sowing seeds in packed soil, rocky soil, weedy soil, or good soil?

JOY in Christ Alone

As we wrap up the first part of our JOY series (Joy, Others, Yourself) I begin by asking you, "Are you saved?" Have you ever thought about what this question is really asking of you? This week we will be pondering what it means to have Christ as the all-in-all in our lives. What does a saved life look like? What does it mean to be a "child of God" or a "son/daughter of God"? Do you have JOY in Christ alone?

Inseparable JOY

This week we being the second section of our JOY sermon series, as we spend the next three weeks focusing on the letter "O" for Others. This week I want you to ask yourself, "Do you know that NOTHING or NO ONE can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus?"

JOY in Blessing Others

In the Bible we see Abraham & Sarah blessed by God with many descendants. Jacob is blessed during a wrestling match with the Lord, and his name is changed to Israel. We see Jesus blessing individuals with hope, healing and food for their stomachs. We see all of the blessings God has given to us throughout the ages, laid out for us in Psalm 145. But how can we be a blessing to Others? This week we will make our own list of how we can offer joy and blessings to those around us, each and every day.

The JOY in Salvation for All

When was the last time that you spent some time in silence, listening for God's still small voice. Spend some time this week, stepping out of the boat like Peter, and on faith, walking on water. Take some time, like Elijah, pushing the noise of this world aside, that you might hear God speaking to you. Spend some time, calling upon the name of the Lord....for if you do, you shall surely be saved!

Harmony is Pure JOY!

If you want pure JOY in your life, your life must be in harmony with God and with others around you. Spend time discerning your relationship with God. Are your thoughts in harmony with His? Are you ways unified with His? And then understand that if you want a joyful family, community, church and world, you must make sure you are doing your part. What must you do to have the type of harmony in your life, that King David speaks of in Psalm 133?

JOY in Trusting in the Lord

Throughout the Bible we are challenged again and again to trust in the Lord. We are warned against trusting in princes, in riches, or in ourselves; for all such trust is in vain. Trusting in the Lord is represented as being safe, blessed, and as producing desirable results. In it is our hope, our strength, our safety, and our JOY. Do you trust in the Lord?

God's Word: My JOY and Hearts's Desire

How hungry are you for the Lord? How important is it that like Paul, you care for the “other”? How much do you desire to never repay evil for evil, no gossiping, no slandering, no holding grudges, no evil thoughts? Imagine being in such a place in your life, that because of this passion and love for the Lord and doing the Lord’s work, that it becomes YOUR heart’s desire to share the gospel and the love of the Lord to everyone you meet.

Holy Ghost Breath

As we begin our study on the Holy Ghost, we begin at the beginning, in Genesis chapter 1. It is here that we find the first mention of the Holy Ghost (ruach in Hebrew), here referred to as the breath of God. This breath spoke creation into existence, and in Chapter 2 of Genesis, breathed life into humankind.

Holy Ghost Names

Do you know the origins of your name? Has your mother or father told you how they came to give you the blessed name that they did? Names are very important! We are named after family members and friends in order to honor them. We are named after passed relatives in order to memorialize them. Some of us are named after our parent's favorite actors or singers or TV personalities. But those names are a part of who we are. Just as in the Bible, the names of God's chosen, were descriptive of who they are and whose they are, so too are our names.

Holy Ghost Power

We must remember that in order to tap into Holy Ghost Power, we must yield our own control, power and pride to the Spirit. This might seem backwards to the way the world tells us we should live, but it is an important step in our faith process. If we want to receive the fullness of the Spirit's power in our life, we have to first be willing to yield all that we are to God. Are you ready to yield? Are you ready for Holy Ghost Power?

Holy Ghost Talk

We talk to God in order to constantly build and strengthen our relationship with Him, to get to know Him better, to learn what He expects of us, what we can expect from Him, and to find out how we can best accomplish the things that He wants us to do. We also talk to God in order to seek His advice and help, to show Him that we recognize His existence and awesome power, and of course to show Him that we have trust and confidence in Him.

Holy Ghost Walk

If the Holy Ghost is in you, let Him have control over your life. If He lives in you, let Him direct your life. Walking in the spirit simply means you make no decisions until you first hear from Him. We surrender our will and give complete control over to Him. The key to this walk is found in three words: JUST SAY YES! Say yes to all the promises of God and believe the Holy Ghost to accomplish this in and through you.

Holy Ghost Led

One of the greatest benefits of our redemption is the privilege of being led by the Spirit of God. Children of God can be expected to be led by the Holy Ghost. Children of the world can be led by the evil one. Is the Holy Ghost leading you?

Holy Ghost for All

Nearly 7 billion people live on this planet. Vast distances of land and ocean separate us one from the other. Our differences create a beautiful mosaic of appearances, beliefs, cultures and customs. Underneath, we are one in Spirit, members of the family of God.

We each have the spark of the Divine within that comprises our spirit. Today, let us celebrate our unity--our sisterhood and brotherhood--by affirming: I am one in Spirit with all people. I am a part of the Body of Christ!

Holy Ghost Gifts

A spiritual gift is a God-given ability to serve the church and our community effectively. God has graciously, undeservedly equipped each of us with the ability to minister to others within the body of Christ. A spiritual gift, then, more than being a possession, is a channel through which the Holy Ghost ministers to His church. This is the means He has chosen to edify the Church.

Holy Ghost Fruit

When Christians speak of the work of the Holy Ghost, they are speaking about the operations of the Spirit of God in the world we live in, and within us. But the Spirit isn't here just to hang out. The Spirit is there to cause things to happen in peoples' lives that bring them more in tune with God's purposes. Words like 'result' or 'growth' help us little to envision this. When the Spirit starts changing someone, it shows as a growth in character, a change in their way of life that is good for everyone. This change in character and way of life is called a 'fruit of the Spirit'.

Reaping the Benefits

Sowing and reaping helps us gain an eternal perspective. Sowing and reaping are separated by time. Sowing is the beginning of the process, while reaping is the culmination of it. When the farmer sows his field, he must do so in faith, trusting that all of his efforts will eventually be worthwhile. Nearly everything which the farmer does, he does in the light of what he hopes to be the outcome. So it is with the spiritual life.

Christmas Hope

We’re beginning our Advent series today entitled Simply Christmas. Our goal is to simplify the busy Christmas season and to place our focus where it needs to be, on the babe born in the manger.

The insistent message of Advent is -- don't settle for less than the full power of God Immanuel, God always with us. Don't allow Advent to be only about picture-perfect scenes or sticky-sweet, candle-lit windows. Advent is about the desperate need for forgiveness and the restoration of HOPE through a loving relationship with God. Anything less than that is selling God short.

November 27, 2011

Christmas Peace

Advent is an opportunity for spiritual growth. But, many times instead of preparing ourselves for the Christ Child, we are instead thinking about the in-laws who are visiting, what were're going to get for our spouse, how we're going to pay off the credit-card debt, who's going to babysit the kids during the Christmas party, how we might handle Uncle Harry who always drinks too much of the eggnog, whether to serve turkey or ham, or whether it's feasible to get Grandma from the nursing home and include her in the festivities. Maybe there's more to Christmas than this.

Christmas Joy

"It came without ribbons! It came without tags! "It came without packages, boxes or bags!" And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzlers was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! "Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. "Maybe Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more!"

Christmas Love

Why did God create you? God created many and all are made of love and all are made to love - the miracle of love only works if you want to become a fully loving member of the family of divine love. Once you have fallen in love with the one God created for you - your entire eternal life will be a permanent fire of miracles of love! Then, every person you add in your heart of love will expand your fire of love even further - the more people you truly love - the greater and more powerful your own feeling of love, hope, joy and peace.

Christmas Tonight

Everywhere, everywhere Christmas tonight...what a beautiful Christmas Carol, which calls us to not forget that Christmas is not about the snow and the trees and the children, but rather about our Savior. He was born to us, in order to save us from our sins. He came that we might have life, and have it abundantly. We are blessed to have carols like this, which gently point us to the manger, when our sights might be focused on the lights, tree and festivities of Christmas.

"For the Christ-child who comes is the Master of all,
No place too great and no cottage too small;

Christmas Newness

If you were asked like Elizabeth to bear the forerunner, the Preparer, John
the your old age, would you, could you say “yes?” Or if you
were asked like Mary to bear the Savior, the Messiah the Christ
your young age, would you, could you say “yes?”

I am not so sure many women would, or could. But Elizabeth took the
time. She realized the honor. She understood the importance. And Mary,
likewise, also took the time. She had long awaited the coming of the
Messiah. How could she say no to bringing Him to the world?

Praise Him / Hymn Sing

This week was a holiday weekend, when attendance would be a little lower, so both services came together for a Praise Him / Hymn Sing. There wasn't a sermon, but rather 5 key movements (Creation, Music, Love, Christ and Doxology) during worship, opening with scripture to support them, and then offering up a time of reflection. These scriptures and reflections are posted here, just in case you missed them, or in case you want to go deeper. Enjoy!

Where is a Big Fish When You Need One?

Jonah was given a call by God to go to Nineveh and to preach to them the need to repent of their sinful ways and worship the Lord. He does not want to go. He dislikes the Assyrians, he finds this all a waste of time, deep down, he doesn't want the people of Nineveh to receive God's love and mercy. So he runs the opposite direction, gets on a boat and sails away from all of his troubles. Or so he thinks!

Listen Up!

As we continue to talk about the importance of God's call upon our life; as we jump deeper and deeper into a relationship with Christ, a huge component that we consistently forget is how well we are "listening" to God.

A Call to Discipleship

God called Samuel while he slept in the Temple. Samuel was obedient and answered, "Here I am, Lord."

Jesus called the disciples to come and follow Him. It wasn’t in any grand manner, in any grand place. He simply spoke to them, asking them to follow Him, and they leave everything to follow Him.

What does it mean to be called by God?

Hunger for Healing

Healings happen all around us, every moment of every day. The problem is, we often don’t see them as miracles from God.

Have you had a miracle in your own life? Has God done something extra-ordinary for you, a spouse, a child, a friend?

Bring your brokenness and pain to the Lord. Let Him heal you -- body, mind and spirit -- today!

Are You Willing?

In Jesus' day there were people who were considered holy and clean, and there were those who were considered unholy and unclean.

Jesus did not spend His time on earth catering only to the holy and clean. He was about breaking bread, reaching out a loving hand and lending a listening ear to the unholy and the unclean as well.

Who can you reach out to this Epiphany season. Who can you bring into the love of Christ? Are you willing?

Forever Changed

Have you ever wondered what it will be like when Jesus comes in all of His Glory to set up His kingdom and bring the world as we know it to an end?

Today’s texts give us a glimpse of this yet… future… event.

Jesus is trying to prepare his disciples for what lies ahead for Him, as well as for them. He speaks plainly to them in regards to His death and resurrection.

Ash Wednesday

Lent is a time to make room for God. To re-connect with God and with one another, through very basic means—prayer; scripture; worship; service; and fasting.
How will you make room for God this Lent?

Siding With the Lord is Tempting

As we set out on this Lenten journey, are we as focused as Jesus? As we grow weak and tired, will we remember the truth of our baptism: that WE are claimed…chosen as God's beloved. As we walk along life’s path, will we rest assured that Christ walks with us? The work is not easy in this wilderness called life, but it is important.

February 26, 2012

Are You Siding with Christ?

Many men and women in the Bible faced temptation - temptation to do the opposite of what God asked them, temptation to trust another person instead of the Lord, temptation to do your own thing under your own strength instead of relying fully on God.

If Adam and Even, Abraham and Sarah, Jonah, the disciples and Christ himself were tempted, who are we to think we will not be.

What is tempting you? What is a stumbling block, temptation, or out-and-out sin, which you need to give to the Lord this Lenten season?

February 29, 2012

I AM the Messiah!

Who is Jesus for you?

Jesus is not a simple man. But this question is the same question that Jesus asked the disciples, "Who do you say I AM?" Make it personal for you by asking, "Who is Jesus for you?...personally...intimately?"

Are you meeting Jesus somewhere different this Lenten season, so you can actually answer this question honestly, "What does it mean to have Jesus as my Savior, as my Messiah, as the Great I AM?"

March 4, 2012

Who Do You Say That He Is?

We call Him by man names: Lamb of God, Friend, Great I AM, Shepherd, Guardian of Souls, Messiah. Who is Jesus Christ to you?

This question can be the most important question of your life, one which needs to be answered intimately and honestly.

His name and nature and purpose and love have been revealed to us through scripture. But we need to be answering this question with more than just mere lip-service. Jesus needs to be our All-in-All, our everything, our Savior, our Redeemer, our Sustainer, our Judge and our King.

Is He all of this, and so much more, for you?

Jesus Was Angry!

Who in the world does this carpenter from Nazareth think he is? This isn't the "gentle Jesus meek and mild" we’re accustomed to. What is it that has created such passion in him?

March 11, 2012

Have You Ever Been Angry?

We carry a lot of pent up anger around with us. We know it isn't right. We know it isn't healthy, but that doesn't stop us from keeping it within us, anyway. Maybe it is time to get to the root of the problem, and finally let it go. Maybe it's time to lay it at the foot of the cross forever.

March 14, 2012

For God So Loved the World

God so loved us that he sent His one and only Son to die for us on the cross. He gave His all for us...have we done the same for Him?

Love is a two-way street, between human and human, and between human and God. If we love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, as He asks of us, then we will love our neighbor as we love our self.

March 18, 2012

How Can We Show Love to the World?

Jesus asked us to love one another, and on a one-on-one relationship that can be easy. But, how do we show the love of God to the world? We will spend some time this evening, talking about what Christ intended the church to be like, how we can learn to put others first, how we can be more gracious and forgiving to one another, and so much more.

March 21, 2012

The Hour Has Come

Jesus spent great amounts of time letting the disciples know that He would one day be taken from them. He told them in parable form. He told them through His actions. He even told them as clear as He could say it. But they did not understand. How could the Messiah, the Son of God, die?

Now the time is close and He wants them to be prepared. He tells them the Hour Has Come! Code words for, I am about to be crucified, the disciples did not understand. Do we?

Are You Ready For the Cross

We are coming into the home stretch...Good Friday is almost here. The cross is right before us, and it is time to make our plea. Are you ready for Holy Week? Maundy Thursday

In this Maundy Thursday service, we encountered the ten laments that Jesus had for His faithless church. We interspersed music which spoke to each one, and then ended the service with the stripping of the church, leaving it bare for Good Friday, and the time Jesus spent in the tomb.

Wednesday of Holy Week

Holy Week contains within it the holiest days of the entire Church year. In response we can humbly express gratitude to God. Healed With His Stripes: FEET

Second sermon in the series, Healed With His Stripes. This message centers on the precious feet of Jesus, what they meant to Him, and what they mean for us today. We can be healed by Jesus' stripes. We can be emboldened by His love. And, we can be empowered to enter into the world, using our feet for ministry!

Healed With His Stripes: SWEAT

Over the last couple of weeks we have been understanding more fully what it means to be healed by the stripes of Jesus. This Sunday we learn that in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus sweat blood, and by the sweat and blood of his brow, he won back our willpower. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve lost willpower when they surrendered their dominion to Satan. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus said, “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Matthew 26:39) He submitted to the WILL OF GOD as He shed sweat drops of His Precious Blood to redeem our willpower.

April 29, 2012

Healed With His Stripes: HEAD

We cannot understand all that Jesus endured for us. Take the thorns, twisted into a crown by the hands of a Roman soldier, thrust down upon Jesus’ head with rough hands, driven deeper into the flesh of the skull with a rod, making the pain more extreme than we can ever know. But, as cruel as this treatment of the Lord must have been, the thing which is so illogical, is that He endured it all for a sinful creation.

Healed With His Stripes: SIDE

Water, Blood, Spirit. Three ways in which Christ comes to us, loves us, and heals us. Three testimonies which all agree. Jesus is the Christ. He died for sinners, He rose in victory, He ascended and reigns on high. Water, Blood, Spirit. Three timeless concepts from John's letter which still apply to us, even today.

Healed With His Stripes: FACE/BACK

For six weeks now, we have been talking about the blood of the Lamb. We’ve used Isaiah 53:5 as our primary text during this Easter Season sermon series on Healed With His Stripes. But today, as we finish up this study, we are going to immerse ourselves fully in these verses of Isaiah 53, verses which were written about the Messiah, Jesus Christ, 700 years before His birth.

Love Is . . . Godly

God’s love is in us, through Word and Spirit…but, what is love? Many of us toss around this word too easily. And we end up trivializing it. From the Barney theme song, to tourism marketing slogans, to the desire we have for chocolate, our vehicles, or our favorite pastime or entertainment, the word "love" is so misused and overused in our society that we hardly know what to think when someone says, "I love you."

June 3, 2012

Love Is . . . Life-changing

Throwing rocks will not change the world. All our stones will do is hurt and dent and break it. If we want to make a change….a life-changing impact on our family, work place, neighborhood, church, community or world, we have to first drop our rocks. If we want to be seen as more loving, more grace-filled, more Christ-like, then we have to be the first to put down our stone.

It’s only when we let loose of our grip on our rocks and let them thud to the ground in grace, that we too can experience life-changing love.

Love Is . . . Desperate

Sickness makes us do some strange things, doesn't it? Pain can make us desperate. Not satisfied with conventional treatment, the sick may seek alternative treatments not endorsed by traditional medicine. Some alternatives may prove valid, even miraculous. Others may flirt with quackery, but at least they are something to do and to try.

June 17, 2012

Love Is . . . Spirit-filled

Pastor Karen was out of the pulpit for vacation.
The guest speaker was Rita Snider, Lay Leader of the church.

Testimonials were offered by children, youth and adults who have felt the love of the Holy Spirit, while at camp.

Camp stories were shared and camp songs sung.

Love Is . . . Extravagant

What if we could begin to comprehend how much God loves us. Would our outlook on life be different? Would we treat another child of His with care knowing how precious they are in His sight? Could we let go of years of teachings that showcase God as this tyrannical meanie waiting to pounce on our every misstep or mistake? You know the one--he appears more like Godzilla than the God of John 3:16!

Love Is . . . Surpassing

William Borden was on his way to work as a missionary in China. But he never made it. He was struck down with disease, before he ever reached his destination, dying in Egypt. As he lay dying, he wrote a final note for his friends and family – it simply read, "No reserve, no retreat, and no regrets."

Many of us hear that and think, ‘How? How can a man experience such a tragedy and still find satisfaction in God?’ After all, he believed God had called him to be a missionary in China!

July 15, 2012

Love Is . . . Healing

In multitudes of church services over the years I have seen believers come forward to receive healing prayer. An honest assessment of the results? Some have been healed; the majority have not. Many times I have asked, why is this? And I believe that the answer is becoming clearer to me.

If one studies the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in the Gospels, a recurring pattern emerges — again and again, Jesus looked to see if the sick person was showing faith to be healed, as in Matthew 9:30 "'According to your faith will it be done to you'; and their sight was restored."

July 22, 2012

Love Is . . . Word

Has your boss ever come up to you and said, "We need to have a word..." Terrifying isn't it? You wonder what you've done wrong. You question actions you've taken lately. You imagine the worst, even if the word you need to have isn't about anything bad at all!

In John's gospel, the first chapter, I believe God is speaking the same message to us through John. God wants to have a word with us. But, what on earth could He want?

July 29, 2012

Love Is . . . .Compassionate

"Compassion," such a simple word … a simple word, yet not so simply done. Compassion is a noun, and that means it is an action word -- something that you and I are "to do". It means, "sympathy for the suffering of others, including a desire to help."

That, my friends, is what Jesus' ministry was all about! His time here on earth was all about caring for the suffering of others and desiring to help. Jesus was filled with compassion and love, for all of His creation!

Love Is . . . Forgiving

Watch this clip from Fireproof called Caleb's Apology.

Forgiveness -- it's an easy word to say, but a difficult thing to do.

Try to forget for a moment everything you have ever heard or assumed about forgiveness. Let a single word impress itself on your mind, the biblical word, the new covenant word. In Greek it is "aphesis," in English, "release."

Love Is . . . Independent

Independence and self-reliance are good qualities until they come between us and our God. Our human nature tells us to believe that God helps those who help themselves. The Bible teaches us to believe that God helps those who ask for His help. The Bible teaches us that what God wants from us is: humility, trust, and dependence.

This week, lets remind ourselves about our dependence on God rather than our

Love Is . . . Neighborly

Good neighbors are a true gift from God. But, do we love them as much as we love ourselves?

Neighbors, they are very important in life. They can be confidants, helpers,
therapists, acquaintances, or even enemies. But I bet each of you today can
think of at least one neighbor who has had an impact upon your life.

Labor Day Hymn Sing

God wants to be in relationship with us, He desires nothing more. But, we are so engrossed with our own lives, we are so entranced with the worldly, that we forget Him and His ways.

This Fall we are going to get back to the essentials. We're going to spend time discerning not only our need for a relationship with our Lord, but also how we can improve that relationship, so that we are "holy in His sight."
